"Trésors Carolingiens,Livres Manuscrits de Charlemagne à Charles le Chauve" (Carolingian Treasures, Books, Manuscripts from Charlemagne to Charles the Bald) is the book that accompanied the 2007 exposition in Paris at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (the Nationale Library of France) that was the first major exposition covering these items since 1954. The exposition was designed to elluminate the flowering "renaissance" that occurred in 9th century France when the Carolingians brought a series of educational, religious, and artistic reforms to the region, and resulted in a wide array of documents and art works that have survived until this day.The book is sumptuously illustrated. Like all books printed by the French National Library, this one is printed in full color on semi-gloss heavyweight paper, and is simply one of the most superbly printed books you'll likely come across. Because of its quality, it is physically heavy--the book weighs about two pounds, even in its softcover format--but that should be of no concern, since the quality of the book oozes forth on every page. Photos are high resolution and in full color. Extensive text accompanies all photos, describing the piece's background and significance in the Carolingian world. Some reproductions are full page, some of illuminated manuscripts, others of key artwork, and some of drawings from the period. The book is divided into political and cultural items, a catalog of works held in the library, and a series of annexes that support the collection. The book is about 240 pages in length (including bibliography) and is printed on A4 paper (which is slightly larger than 8.5 x 11 sized paper.These types of books are expensive (even when first printed) and rare (they have limited printings). This means that locating these in the used retail market may often be difficult and expensive. But if you are interested in this area, its worth the effort to locate a copy. In the case here, it will be difficult, and perhaps, impossible, to find a better illustrated and more detailed textual description, of Carolingian art held in the French national reserves. Highly recommended.
